C1256 is one of the most common brake codes on imported Toyota hybrids in Pakistan. It means the brake actuator's pump cannot build, or cannot keep, enough pressure in time. This guide explains what the code means, what to check first, when the honest answer is a new actuator, and what the replacement costs in Pakistan.
A Toyota hybrid does not use the vacuum brake booster found on a normal petrol car. Instead, the brake actuator has a small electric pump that charges an accumulator with brake fluid under high pressure. That stored pressure provides power braking, ABS and VSC, and lets the car blend regenerative braking with the normal brakes.
The brake control computer watches accumulator pressure through a pressure sensor. If the pump runs but pressure does not reach its target in the expected time, or falls below the minimum, the computer stores C1256 "Accumulator Low Pressure" and turns on the warning lights. Put simply, the system is asking for pressure and not getting it.
The two codes are related but they are not the same fault. C1391 means pressure is leaking away after the pump has built it, usually through worn seals or valves inside the actuator. C1256 means the pressure is not being reached or maintained in the first place.
That difference matters for diagnosis. C1391 almost always points inside the actuator, while C1256 can also come from the supply side: low fluid, a weak 12V supply or a tired pump. The two often appear together, because a leaking accumulator also makes it hard for the pump to reach pressure. Our C1391 code guide covers the leak side in detail.
You may also see related pump codes stored alongside it, such as C1252 (pump motor running too long) or C1253 (pump motor relay). Read together, these codes tell us whether to look at power, pump or actuator first.
The code is common on Toyota and Lexus hybrids that use this type of electronic brake system, including:
Pump location, part numbers and pressure values differ from model to model, but the logic behind the code and the order of checks are the same.
Most owners notice the warning lights first. Look out for these signs:
If the lights are on but the pedal feels normal, drive gently and directly to a workshop, leaving extra distance to the car in front. If the pedal is hard or the car takes longer to stop, do not drive it. The system falls back to plain hydraulic braking, which still works but needs much more pedal force and a longer distance to stop, which is a real risk in Karachi traffic. Call for a scan at your location instead.
A good diagnosis works from the cheapest possible cause upward. Replacing an actuator on a car with a weak 12V battery simply brings the same code back.
If the reservoir level is low, the pump draws air and cannot build pressure. The level drops as brake pads wear, or because of a leak that must be found. Old fluid that is dark and full of moisture also makes the pump and valves work harder. The fix is a top-up or a full flush, followed by electronic bleeding.
The pump motor runs on the 12V system and draws heavy current when it starts. A weak 12V battery, loose terminals or a corroded earth strap lets the voltage sag, so the pump spins slowly and pressure takes too long to build. This often shows up with C1241 (low power supply voltage). A 12V test takes minutes and should always come before any expensive part.
The pump is switched on through relays and fuses. Burnt relay contacts, a corroded connector or a damaged wire can starve the pump even when the battery is healthy. These are straightforward to resolve once properly diagnosed.
After many years of starting and stopping, the pump motor wears. It still runs, but slowly or noisily, and the scan shows a long pump run time. On modern hybrid vehicles, the pump motor is integrated into the actuator assembly, requiring complete unit replacement.
Inside the actuator, the accumulator, its seals, the valves or the pressure sensor can fail. None of these internal accumulator parts can be reliably repaired, so this requires complete hybrid ABS replacement.
To be honest: on older imported cars, especially the Prius Gen 2 and early Aquas, the actuator has often done 10 years or more before it reaches Pakistan. After the cheap checks, C1256 on these cars often ends in actuator replacement. We still check the cheaper items first so that you only pay for what the car needs.
| Check | What it tells us | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid level and colour | Low level, leak or moisture in fluid | Top up or flush, then electronic bleed |
| 12V battery and voltage | Whether the pump gets full power | New 12V battery, clean terminals |
| Relay, fuses, wiring | Whether the pump switches on properly | Replace relay, fix connector |
| Pump run time (live data) | Pump too slow or worn | Hybrid ABS replacement |
| Pressure hold test | Internal leak or sensor fault | Actuator replacement |
Many workshops clear C1256 with a basic scanner and send the car back. The lights go off until the next self-check, which may be a few minutes or a few days later. The low pressure problem has not changed, and repeated clearing only hides a fault that is getting worse. If the code returns after clearing, the car needs diagnosis, not another reset.
Whenever the hydraulic side is opened, whether for a fluid flush, pump work or a new actuator, the system must be bled with a scan tool. The bleeding routine cycles the valves inside the actuator to push out trapped air, which the old pedal-pumping method cannot do. The system then needs its zero-point calibration, or new codes such as C1345 will appear. We include bleeding, calibration and a road test in every replacement.
The cost depends on which of the causes above is behind the code. As a guide:
These are starting prices. The exact price depends on your model and is confirmed after a scan, before any work begins. The diagnostic is free with any replacement. For the full list of ABS work and prices, see our hybrid ABS replacement page.
We start with a free computerized scan at your home or office anywhere in Karachi. Our technician checks the fluid, the 12V battery, pump run time and live pressure data, then explains the result and the options before any work. Simple fixes such as fluid service and 12V work are often done on the spot.
Actuator replacements are done at our workshop on 26th Street, Badar Commercial Area, DHA Phase 5, open 24 hours, seven days a week. Every replacement includes electronic bleeding, calibration, a road test and a before/after scan report.

C1256 means accumulator low pressure. The brake actuator's electric pump cannot build enough pressure in the accumulator in the expected time, or cannot keep it above the minimum. The brake computer then stores the code and turns on the ABS, VSC and brake warning lights. The cause can be low fluid, a weak 12V supply, the pump relay or wiring, a worn pump, or a failed actuator.
C1391 means pressure is leaking away inside the actuator after the pump has built it, which almost always points to worn internal seals or valves. C1256 means pressure is not being reached or maintained, which can also come from low fluid, a weak 12V battery or a tired pump. The two codes often appear together, because a leaking accumulator also makes it hard for the pump to reach pressure.
Yes. The brake pump runs on the 12V system and draws heavy current when it starts. If the 12V battery is weak or the terminals are corroded, the voltage drops, the pump runs slowly and pressure takes too long to build, which can set C1256, often together with C1241. This is common in Pakistani summers, so we always test the 12V battery before recommending any expensive part.
If the pedal feels normal, you can drive gently and directly to a workshop, keeping extra distance from other cars. If the pedal is hard or the car takes longer to stop, do not drive it. The brakes fall back to plain hydraulic operation, which needs much more pedal force and a longer stopping distance. In Karachi we can scan the car at your location instead.
It depends on the cause. A brake fluid service with electronic bleeding is inexpensive, Hybrid ABS replacement starts from around PKR 85,000 installed for Aqua and Prius with tested genuine units (never repaired or refurbished), including bleeding and calibration. The exact price is confirmed after a scan, before any work begins.
